Butter Crisp

Butter Crisps

This crispy butter waffle, baked to a golden brown, is still made according to a private 19th century family recipe.

True to a century-old fancy fair tradition, the mistress of the house would bake this type of butter waffles around New Year for her family or to give away as by way of wishing good luck in the new year to come. These biscuits are still part of regional folklore and better known as 'lukken' < 'luck'. Every family had its own recipe.

Jules Destrooper, a colonial tradesman and a very talented baker in the Flemish village of Lo, was combining the best exotic spices with local traditional ingredients, resulting in a unique and refined dough preparation of superior quality, containing only the best natural elements. It took few time for these waffles to become succesful, and very soon families were buying the Jules Destrooper butter crisps with their typical 'diamonds pattern', rather than baking them at home.

Officiële keurmerk streekproduct voor de natuurboterwafels van DestrooperIn September 2006, VLAM (oranization promoting Flemish agriculture, horticulture, fishery and the agro-alimentary sector in Belgium) rewarded the Jules Destrooper Butter Crisps with the official quality mark: "regional product from the Flemish Fields".
